Last week you saw my post about the riches that the Algarve region of Portugal has to offer curious explorers like yourself (and if not, go back and read it now and come back to this!). The Algarve is made up of about 2,000 square miles of area, so it’s a BIG place. How do you know where would be the best location to make your base for exploring it?
Because I’m going to tell you! Carvoeiro, and more specifically, the Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort, is the perfect place to make your home away from home while you experience this wonderful coastal region.
Believe it or not, all the beautiful cliff pictures featured in my previous post were taken either right from the balcony of my hotel or within 10 miles of it. And it doesn’t get any more gorgeous than that, am I right?
Why Carvoeiro?
Carvoeiro is a small town (not like the bustling capital city of the region, Faro) that is centrally located in that you can get to both Faro and Sagres (the southwestern-most town in mainland Portugal) in about an hour driving. Lots of people travel to the Algarve for relaxation, and it may be a bit difficult to relax in a city, which is why Carvoeiro is a great alternative. It’s right in the thick of many of the secluded beaches and caves, gorgeous hiking, and walkable to lots of local restaurants and conveniences as well.
What about the resort itself?
Tivoli Carvoeiro offers what I would argue is the best view right from guestroom balconies of any hotel in southern Portugal. It’s simply breathtaking. The rooms themselves are modern, airy, and clean. They’re pretty standard U.S. hotel room sizes, as opposed to the smaller rooms usually found in many European destinations.
The staff definitely goes above and beyond to make sure guests are happy. We had our own personal concierge who checked in on us periodically and brought us delicious hors d’oeuvres in the evenings which included some local specialties. The bartender, André, is also a delight and you can tell he’s very passionate about his job.
The breakfast buffet is delicious and there are tons of options to choose from. All the food is fresh and flavorful. I also got a burger from the bar area one evening and, I must say, it was the best burger I’ve had in Europe thus far!
Is there an alternative?
We didn’t have the time to visit the town of Lagos, but would have loved to. I’d recommend giving Lagos a visit to anyone in the area, to see Ponta da Piedade, another beautiful rock formation area. It may also be a good place to make your hub if you’re looking for a bit more balance that includes nightlife, shops, etc. instead of the quiet of Carvoeiro.

CAITLYN WITH A COMPASS
(I’m retiring my pen-name “CAITLYN WITHOUT A COMPASS”. I know exactly where I’m going and am well-versed in geography, so I’m going to stop “wandering” and delve headfirst *with a compass ;-)* into more parts of the world I haven’t yet explored!)
